Drugs at Hangkerim

Index

Historical Overview

In ancient Hangkerim, the most common drug used was coca, unrefined and limed coca leaf.  The coca were used by common people as a way to relieve hunger and tireness, much as the way native american Andeans in pre-colombus and modern times has used coca in OTL.  This use is still common in rural and areas and in the forest/jungle.

An slightly refined and smoked coca were used by shamans in ceremonies.

Semtalika people broght tobacco and tobacco use.  Tobacco were firstly used by shamans and spiritual leaders or as a way to sign political deals.  At the end of the medieval period (first republic), tobacco were used by almost every people in special occations... few people were addict.

A maize derived alcoholic brevage (chicha in OTL) were also used in festivities and special ceremonies.

Usually there were spiritual leaders the ones that used this drugs, and chicha and tobacco where then used by the other participants in the acts.  There were a trend in some Hangkerim teologist that equated this practices with Shamanism and begun to ban the use of drugs during normal ceremonies allowing its used for festivity occasions only.

When in contact with Europeans, three important crops got into Hangkerim: Coffee, Canaabis and Poppy, as well as the way to produce refined alcoholic drinks, like wine and rum.  Coffee is less cultivated than in OTL Colombia, and less used, but there are special ceremonies and social meetings where coffee is used.  From Canaabis both hatchis and marihuana are extracted.  Heroine and opium are extracted from poppy.  All this drugs have a place in special ceremonies, mainly in cultures where ancient traditions, and in less extend in modern Hangkerim cult. Christian Hangkerimre only use alcohol in their cult.  Used in these special religious occasions, are accepted, as well as alcohol, coffee and tobacco is accepted in some social meetings.  Use of drugs outside these conditions is socially baned... strong drugs, like cocaine or heroine are forbiden for non-medical purposes, but coca is used in dairy basics and not concidered a drug at all.  It is legal to grow and trade with coca.

Ritual consumption

There is a great inventory of drugs used for ritual consumption in religious ceremonies.

Social consumption

Except for ritual consumption or healing purposes, there are very few occasions a Hangkerimian would socially acceptably use drugs.  Some alcoholic drinks are acceptable in certain situations but getting drunk is not.  Coca chewing, coca tea and many other drugs that have no visible effect in the behavior or the environment, like coffee, cocoa, tea or chewing tobacco are also acceptable, but there are a series of taboos regarding drug consumption, mainly for children.

Hangkerimians believe that children under 5 years should ingest no drug.  From five to the passage ceremony, soft drugs like cocoa or tea are acceptable.  During the passage ceremony the boys and girls are given alcohol, and is probably the only social situation when getting drunk is acceptable.
